A. — MUS., rare. Synon. littér. de flûte de Pan (v. flûte1 A 1). Ma syrinx à neuf tons enduits de cire neuve (LECONTE DE LISLE, Poèmes ant., 1874, p. 234). La flûte rustique, appelée syringe (Ch. BLANC, Gramm. arts dessin, 1876, p. 408).
Rem. On relève parfois le masc.: Le clair syrinx (RIMBAUD, Poés., 1871, p. 40).
B. — ANTIQ. [Gén. sous la forme syringe] Sépulture souterraine de la Vallée des Rois, à Thèbes, précédée d'un long et étroit couloir. Tu n'iras pas rejoindre au fond des syringes (...) la momie peinte et dorée de ton père, le grand prêtre Pétamounoph, dans la chambre funèbre creusée pour toi! (GAUTIER, Rom. momie, 1858, p. 257).
C. — ZOOL. Chez les oiseaux, organe du chant, situé à la jonction de la trachée et des bronches. Diverses classifications sont également proposées: celle des Passereaux par J. Müller, fondée sur la structure de la syrinx (Hist. gén. sc., t. 3, vol. 1, 1961, p. 411).
